Truck Dump Operator

Typical Workday:
You are responsible for the safe and efficient unloading of grain and feed products from trucks and acts as a lead for all truck unloading operations, including overseeing and directing truck drivers while on COFCO’s property. You must understand the proper operation of conveyance equipment, dust systems and the associated safety systems of that equipment. Responsible for keeping the truck traffic in a organized and safe flow pattern. Responsible for properly obtaining the orange and green cards from each truck driver hauling grain and ensuring the grain is going into the correct bin and/or truck dump pit. Responsible for communicating effectively with barge loader tower operators, IOGI grain inspection employees and truck drivers and to ensure safe operations in and around the truck dump pits. Follow established policies and procedures, along with proper communications when operating grain handling equipment. This position is expected to assist all landside areas of the unloading and transferring of grain and feed products which may include, but not limited to truck, rail and cleaning operations.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Leadman responsibilities for the safe and efficient truck unloading of grain and feed products and acts as the lead for all truck dump pit operations, including overseeing truck drivers while on COFCO’s property.
- Talk with management at the beginning of each shift to coordinate the truck unloading schedule as to if the grain is going to the bins and/or direct to the river. Maintain communication thru out the day with management and barge loader tower operators to ensure everyone is on the same page and that the work schedule has not changed.
- Understands the proper transfer systems between truck dump pits to storage bins and to barge loading dock (conveyors, bucket elevator leg and gate selection) and ensuring the proper system is being used for each transfer to prevent cross contamination.
- Pre-starts all conveyance equipment to be used for the day and ensures it is all working properly before dumping the first truck. At the storage bins, pre-starts the air compressor and ensures the dust system is purging properly.
- At the beginning of each day, you are responsible to ensure that each truck pit is empty, gates are closed, orange cones, swing gates or chains are put across each truck pit to ensure no truck pulls over the pits and dumps while personnel are not at the pits and that truck dump systems are on before dumping the first truck.
- Responsible for ensuring gates are changed correctly during the day and that they are properly closed or opened.
- Understands the HMI/PLC systems for proper flow pattern of the grain as it goes into the storage bins.
- Responsible to maintain the truck flow pattern at beginning of the day and during the day by changing the YC and YSB signs so truck drivers know what pit(s) they are to proceed to—communicate with management as the flow pattern can change several times during the day.
- Responsible to obtain a orange (YC) or green (YSB) card from each truck driver before they are allowed to drive over the truck pits (this will reduce the risk of cross contamination of grains).
- During the day, will keep orange cones, swing gates, or chains over the truck pit entrances to ensure no truck pulls over the truck pits and dumps while personnel are not at the truck pit area.
- Works with the barge loader tower operators and grain inspections employees if grain is going directly to barge(s) to ensure efficient and safe operations, as well as ensuring that there is no cross contamination of grains, or feed products.
- Responsible to keep the area around trucks pits swept up thru out the day to prevent cross contamination of products. At the end of each day, cleans the area around the truck pit, works with barge loader tower operator to clean out each pit, and that cones, swing gates, chains, or chains are put across each truck pit—at the storage bin dump pit, closes the electric doors and locks the control room doors.
- If grain or feed products are directly shipped to barge(s), communicates with barge loader tower operators to ensure truck pits are empty before each barge is completed (at the end of the day, or if changing commodities).
- Communicates with trucks drivers as they are unloading grain or feed products out of dump trailers to raise slowly so the grain and feed product doesn’t come out all at once.
- Responsible to watch the grain coming out of trailers to ensure the customer is not plugging loads with poor quality grain—communicates with the IOGI grain inspection employees and management if they see any issues.
- Communicating and working with all other employees and truck drivers to ensure safety is a priority and all safety policies, procedures and rules are always followed—all safety PPR (Personal Protective Equipment) is always being worn.
- Ensures that no one enters the truck dump pits (or any other Confined Space) except management personnel.
- Responsible to ensure no truck driver climbs up on, or inside their trailer and that no truck driver performs any work, repairs, or maintenance on their truck while on property.
- Responsible to ensure that no truck driver is smoking on COFCO’s property—if it is observed, ask driver to extinguish the cigarette, cigar, vaping device, etc. immediately and contact management.
- Follow all facility safety policies, procedures and rules.
- Responsible to maintain a clean and safe work environment (storage bin basement, under the storage bins, around all truck pits, under dust systems, storage bin air compressor room, concrete and gravel areas around the bins and truck dump pits.
- Responsible to keep dust systems discharge spouts unplugged.
- Responsible to report dust system (3 total) magnehelic readings to management at 900AM and 200PM each day.
- Communicates with management any equipment damages, concerns, or safety issues that they have immediately.
- Be willing to assist in other areas of the unloading and transferring of grain and feed products which may include, but not limited to rail, truck, maintenance and cleaning operations.
- To be actively involved in all safety meetings and maintain knowledge of the company’s safety programs by successfully passing testing and courses.
- Observe equipment and safety devices in operation and have knowledge to know if there is an issue by using your senses (sound, sight, smell, or touch) and to communicate to management if they believe there is something inconsistent with normal operations.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience as a truck dump pit operator is preferred.
- Effective communication skills to work with management, other employees, grain inspection employees and truck drivers for working safely and efficiently.
- A willingness to be in a lead man position and direct what needs to be done.
- Ability to remain focused in a demanding and sometimes changing environment while multi-tasking.
- Demonstrated ability to remain focused on safety for all people (employees, visitors, contractors and truck drivers) around the truck dump pit area in a fast -paced operation.
- Basic written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain a good working relationship with other employees and truck drivers.
- Ability and willingness to report to work on time for scheduled workdays—willingness to work daily overtime, six days a week and some Sundays.
- A willingness to learn other job duties and be able to fill-in at other areas when needed.
- High school diploma, or GED equivalent is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical.
- Walking on catwalks at a variety of heights.
- If needed, be able to walk on top of railcars while donned off to the Rail Fall Protection System.
- Climbing stairs and ladders.
- Lifting 50+ LBS on a regular basis thru out the day.
- Working outdoors in a broad range of weather conditions.
- Maintain good physical hygiene and wearing clothing suitable for the work area
